Welcome to Lorne House

Lorne House is a large Victorian villa in the lovely Wiltshire village of Box, just six miles from  Bath. We offer an elegant charm, gorgeous rooms and a friendly, personal service. Lorne House provides the ideal base from which to explore both Bath and the nearby beautiful, historic villages of Lacock, Castle Combe, Bradford on Avon, Corsham and Avebury.

Lorne House was built in 1876 and was initially known as Lorne Villa. Between 1920-1928 when it was briefly renamed Journey’s End, the house was the childhood home of the Rev. W.V. Awdry, author of the Thomas the Tank Engine stories. He acknowledged that it was living at Journey’s End, lying in bed listening to the steam trains climbing Box Hill, that provided the inspiration for his classic tales.

Under new ownership since November 2016, Lorne House has been furnished to a very high standard; all rooms are en-suite, with wet-rooms or bathrooms, and come equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, flat screen television, iron and ironing board. There is free wifi throughout the house. Our breakfasts are hearty and substantial, with fruit, cereals, toast, traditional cooked English breakfast or continental options, served in our lovely light and spacious dining room. Our locally sourced food includes Sandridge Farmhouse Wiltshire cure bacon and sausages and eggs from the village. Our marmalade is home-made.

We have lived in this area since 1999 and have a very detailed and personal knowledge of Bath and beyond; we are always happy to make recommendations and give advice.

CORONAVIRUS INFORMATION:  As per the current government guidance, mask wearing is now optional. Hand sanitisers are available throughout the house.

We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that guests pre-book restaurants and any activities such as visits to the Roman Baths or The Thermae Bath Spa ahead of your stay to avoid disappointment.  For a list of local restaurants and pubs please click HERE or refer to our Lorne House Guest Information Booklet.

Why Choose Lorne House?

As an independently owned and run guesthouse we aim to deliver the highest standards and an attentive, personal service, ensuring our guests make the most of their stay.

Our rooms are beautifully designed and furnished, all linen is Egyptian cotton and our bathrooms are splendid modern wet-rooms. Wifi is available throughout the house and all rooms are equipped with everything our guests might need.  With Bath but a short drive or easy bus ride away, we are perfectly situated for guests who wish to visit the city and/or the  wonderful Wiltshire sites of Avebury, Stonehenge, Lacock, Castle Combe and Bradford on Avon. Children are welcome at Lorne House and cots and high chairs are available for children under 2 years of age.

Lorne House has a comfortable guest sitting room and a large outdoor verandah which benefits from both afternoon and evening sunshine.  Lorne House has off street parking onsite and our guests are permitted to park in the large Doctor’s Surgery carpark next to us at weekends. We have an electric (EV) car charging point onsite.

Warm welcome from owner Bob to a beautiful, clean Victorian house. A large, VERY comfortable bed in large bedroom. Comfortable lounge, attractive dining room and superb breakfast. Could not fault it.

I received an upgrade for the night I was there. The owners were helpful with where to go for an evening meal and where to go for a morning run. The breakfast was also of a high standard with a good selection of premium cereals and the cooked breakfast was of high quality.
